Bergamo Christmas Markets 2026
At Christmas Bergamo has two faces: the lower town (Città Bassa) has the wooden market huts, the Ferris wheel and Christmas villages for children; the upper town (Città Alta) has the lights, the tree in Piazza Vecchia and glowing medieval lanes. Here's where the markets are, how far they are on foot from Rocca View and how to plan your day.
- Where
- Lower town: Piazza Matteotti and the Sentierone, Piazzale degli Alpini, Piazza Vittorio Veneto. Upper town: tree and lights in Piazza Vecchia.
- When
- In 2025 from mid/late November until late December – 6 January (depending on the market).
- From Rocca View
- 18–22 minutes on foot — no car or parking needed.

Piazza Matteotti and the Sentierone: Christmas Village and Ferris wheel
The most central market: around fifteen wooden huts with sweets, decorations, gifts and street food, right on the Sentierone, the lower town's main promenade. Next to it stands a Ferris wheel of about 32 metres with views of the illuminated upper town.
- 2025 edition: from 21–22 November to 6 January, open into the evening (later at weekends).
- From Rocca View: about 1.4 km, an 18–20 minute walk.
Piazzale degli Alpini: the Christmas Village by the station
The largest village, opposite the railway station: almost thirty huts with crafts, cheese, honey, mulled wine, food stands and play areas for children. On December weekends Santa Lucia and Father Christmas visit, with music and shows.
- 2025 edition: from mid/late November to late December – early January, closed on 25 December.
- From Rocca View: about 1.6 km, a 22-minute walk. Handy if you arrive by train.
Piazza Vittorio Veneto: the Christmas Forest
A few steps from the Sentierone the square turns into a small forest of decorated fir trees around a tall tree of light — the favourite spot for family photos. In 2025 it also hosted Father Christmas's house, free to enter.
- From Rocca View: about 1.4 km, a 19-minute walk.
Città Alta at Christmas: lights, tree and nativity scenes
The upper town has no real hut market — its Christmas is about light. The lighting of the tree in Piazza Vecchia opens the season, the old lanes are illuminated, and the "Christmas Design" art installations appear between the lower and upper town. Evening, between Piazza Vecchia, the Cathedral and Santa Maria Maggiore, is the best time.
- On foot from Rocca View: about 20 minutes uphill, entering through Porta Sant'Agostino.
- By funicular: the lower station is about a 16-minute walk from Rocca View and takes you up to Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe.
Santa Lucia, Bergamo's own Christmas for children
In Bergamo children get their presents from Santa Lucia, on the night between 12 and 13 December. The city holds the traditional Santa Lucia Fair, with stalls of sweets and toys around the Sentierone and Piazza Matteotti in the days before 13 December. Exact dates change every year — check the city website before you go.
Practical tips
- Come on a weekday if you can: December weekends are crowded and car parks fill up early.
- Walk: from Rocca View every market is about 20 minutes away, the upper town included. Leaving the car saves queues and parking fees.
- Markets in the afternoon, Città Alta in the evening: the lights look their best after sunset, around 5 pm.
- A morning at Accademia Carrara: the gallery with Raphael, Botticelli and Lotto is a 3-minute walk from Rocca View — perfect if it's cold or raining.
- Dinner in Borgo Santa Caterina: Rocca View's neighbourhood is full of traditional osterie and bars, right on the doorstep.
